Lord of the Flies, Chapter 5. "Assembly." Perspective: Piggy.

Dear Diary,

Today Ralph called an assembly because he was angry. The reason for being angry was simply because no one was doing their jobs. The littluns were hanging out by the beach doing nothing, and not to mention pooping everywhere; that was contaminating our food. People were also making fires that weren’t on the mountain. The teamwork is lacking. Everyone helped build the first shelter and the second, but no one helped with the third shelter. No one was filling the coconuts with fresh water either. The thing that made Ralph ludicrously angry was that Jack let the fire on the mountain burn out. We might have been rescued. I am angry myself, we could have been rescued, and then of course Jack has to ruin everything tempestuously. I also believe that the littluns need to do the bathroom by the rocks where the tide will clean it up.

The worst thing Diary, is that it seems like our friendship and happiness is falling apart. Why? Because Ralph thinks that the fire is most important on this island, but Ralph thinks hunting is the most important. I’m on Ralph’s side because the shelters guard us from harsh weather, animals, and help keep us warm. Not only that, but Ralph is chief so I respect him.

At night, the littluns keep everyone awake because of their lamentation. They’re afraid of the beast. Many people are talking about it now and they’re scared. Percival claims that the beast is coming from the water and he’s very afraid. It was creepy, when everyone was talking about it at the assembly, the trees started a discursive as if someone had said an incantation.

Diary, the dirtiest thing about human nature, is that we’re violent. We’re competitive and sometimes people never stop until they get what they want. If I were the leader/chief, I would have everything planned so that we never have problems. I would rule with decorum. I would be caring, but strict.

Keep you updated,
Piggy.
